What you’ll need:
The ingredients in this Mexican dip are few, but freshness and quality are vital to making a delicious dip. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 3 ripe avocados
- 1 firm tomato
- Juice from 2 limes
- 1 small red onion
- 1 jalapeno
- handful of chopped cilantro (optional)
How to make it:
The secret to making a really good guacamole dip is: Don’t overmix it!
This mexican dip should have a little texture to it–not too smooth or creamy–but a bit chunky. Here’s how to get it to the perfect consistency!
- Slice and seed tomato; chop into small pieces and place in a bowl
- Add diced onions
- Cut avocado in half and scoop it into the bowl; use a fork to mash and combine ingredients
- Finish off with a squeeze of lime juice, salt and pepper!
How to select an avocado
Most often, the avocados in the grocery store are small and either too ripe, or not ripe enough. The best avocados for perfect guacamole are not yet fully ripe.
They are medium green (not black or light green), have a relatively firm touch with just a hint of tenderness to them.
Here’s an easy way to quickly ripen the avocado in only a few days.
How to quickly ripen an avocado
If the only avocados available are not yet ripe, you can ripen them in a day or so by placing them in a paper bag with an apple or kiwi.
Apples and kiwi produce a natural plant hormone, ethylene gas, which propels the ripening process for avocados and bananas.
How to select a tomato
A few pieces of tomato are included in this recipe for added flavor, texture and color. Some recipes do not call for tomatoes while others add pico de gallo as a tomato substitute.
It’s really a personal preference, but if you elect to add a bit of tomato to your homemade guacamole, select a firm tomato.
Remove the seeds before dicing and adding it to the guacamole. Sometimes the seeds make the dip too watery.
How to prevent guacamole from turning brown
Avocados, like bananas, turn brown once oxygen hits them. Here are steps to avoid those unappealing brown spots in your homemade guacamole:
Place the avocado seed in the dip after the dip is made
Add lime juice
Place plastic cover wrap directly on the guacamole. Gently press the plastic wrap into the top of the dip, as well as around the edges of the bowl. The objective is to eliminate all oxygen from getting to the avocado.
Place a second plastic cover over the entire bowl of dip
If it turns brown, it is still good to eat, as unappealing as it may seem. Simply scrape away the brown spots, stir and serve
Variations
If you’re looking to jazz things up a bit, consider adding some of these ingredients to your guacamole recipe:
- Jalapeno peppers
- Cilantro
- Red Bell Pepper (chopped finely)
- Green Bell Pepper (chopped finely)
- Diced cooked shrimp
- Cotija cheese
Serve guacamole with crispy tortilla chips or serve with Tex-Mex beef or chicken fajitas and a cold Margarita~
